Also from the same desk

Availability, not only security.

Link state, latency, interface errors, disk, UPS runtime, and whether last night's backup actually completed instead of merely starting. This is the unglamorous half of the service. It is also the half that gets called first.

Why it matters

A green dashboard is worth nothing if nobody checks that it should be green. A backup job that reports success because it started, a UPS whose battery has quietly aged out, an interface climbing in CRC errors: these are the failures that arrive as an outage rather than an alert, unless someone is watching for them.

What it covers

The network
Availability monitoring, SNMPv3 polling and traps, syslog, NetFlow or IPFIX, and interface health: errors, CRC and discards, latency and jitter.
The kit under it
UPS runtime and battery state, disk and RAID health, and temperatures, so the physical failures show up before they take a server with them.
The jobs that quietly matter
Backup job success, not just backup job start, and certificate expiry tracked before the HMI goes blank.

How it runs

  1. Instrument

Polling, traps and log collection set up so the things that fail silently become visible.

  2. Baseline

What normal looks like for your links and your kit, so a slow drift toward failure is caught, not just a hard down.

  3. Ticket and escalate

Ticketing and an escalation path, so an alert becomes an action rather than a red square nobody owns.

What you are left holding

  • Monitoring coverage list: what is polled, how, and the thresholds.
  • Availability and health dashboard.
  • Ticket and escalation record.
  • Periodic report on what is trending toward failure.

Questions we are asked first

How is this different from the SOC?

The SOC watches for a security event; the NOC watches for things breaking. Same desk, so the two are correlated rather than siloed, but the NOC is about availability: links, disks, UPS runtime, and whether the backup really finished.

Can you tell us a backup failed before we need it?

Yes, and that is one of the points. We check that the job completed, not merely that it started, because the difference only shows up on the day you try to restore.

Tell us what is bothering you.

An email is enough to start with. A scoping call is free and there is nothing to commit to, and where we are not the right people we will say so and point you at someone who is.
